The album deals with themes of war. As Apocalypse Now is a war film.

The album has sound effects through out the album relating to war such as planes, guns, helicopters and bombs. In a similar vein to the film opening with the ominous sound of helicopters.

In the albums story the character Pink is lead to insanity by isolating himself from the world. In the film, Captain Willard (Martin Sheen) finds Col. Kurts (Marlon Brando) who has gone insane and isolated from the outside world.

The 5 Hour Workprint version of the film has more songs by The Doors playing at certain scenes. So in a sense, Francis Coppola "synced" The Doors to his film.
Story of the Original Concept

The Sync was discovered by friend of Andrew C. Wendland, Marco DeConno in 2004. But the concept of putting The Wall with Apocalypse Now is just as old as the album and film. In January 1980 (five months after the films release and two months after the albums release), Terry Todd had the idea of putting the two together in some way. He eventually came to the idea of putting together in audio form by having songs play at certain scenes or after a scene had played.
After some mixing issues he had to face he finally came to his finished product which he called "Apocwallypse Now". In July of the same year he was invited to 99.3 The FOX to show his audio creation to the world. Terry had also sent copies of his creation to Francis Ford Coppola and Roger Waters to get their thoughts, alas he never heard back.
I found Terry through a video he had posted on YouTube showing a snippet of his radio presentation. I contacted him and he sent me a digital copy of the tape. To which we got talking and he gave me the back story.
